The Federal Employment Agency is involved in au pair placement alongside the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Foreign Office. There are no legal regulations governing au pair placements; guidelines are issued by the Federal Employment Agency in a leaflet (in German).
Important points include:
- a separate room for the au pair,
- participation in family life,
- conclusion of an au pair contract,
- conclusion of au pair insurance by the host family.
If you invite an au pair to Germany, you as the host parents are obliged to take out au pair insurance for the entire duration of their stay. Insurance is mandatory in the event of illness, pregnancy and childbirth, and accidents.
Comprehensive au pair insurance consists of the following components:
- Health insurance,
- Accident insurance,
- Personal liability insurance,
- Liability insurance for au pair activities,
- Deportation costs insurance.
Health insurance
This is required by the Federal Employment Agency. Health insurance for au pairs covers outpatient and inpatient treatment as well as medical repatriation in the event of serious illness or accident. Pregnancy and childbirth are also covered, which is not the case with many travel health insurance policies.
Liability insurance
Here, a distinction must be made: Is it purely personal liability insurance or genuine liability insurance for au pairs? Genuine liability insurance for au pairs always consists of personal liability insurance and insurance for au pair activities. For us, insurance cover for au pair activities is a matter of course, but many providers do not include this in their policies.
If your au pair would like to remain in Germany after completing their au pair year – for example to attend a language course, pursue studies or complete an internship – DR-WALTER offers suitable follow-up insurance plans that fully meet all official and legal requirements.
The transition is seamless, and your responsibility as a host family clearly and reliably ends with the conclusion of the au pair stay.
